Response to Michael Lynton's 'I Wanted Hollywood to Accept Me. So I Made the Biggest Mistake of My Career.'

The following letter is a response that was sent also by email to Mr. Lynton in response to this article: https://www.wsj.com/tech/cybersecurity/sony-north-korea-hack-the-interview-michael-lynton-28a04475

Letter

Dear Mr. Lynton,

I have just finished reading your WSJ opinion in the cybersecurity section regarding the Sony hack of 2014. Thank you for sharing your perspective on the matter publicly. (A quick aside, in 2014, I too was driving my Volkswagen GTI...)

I was disappointed that you did not go deeper into the specifics of what the hack was, what flaw in your system or IT policies allowed the hack, or what you could have done technologically to fix it. I don't blame you for not having your tech in order, almost no American company does.

It seems instead that you blame yourself for poking the proverbial bear. I and many others believe you were right to do so, and that it was a brave decision. I am saddened that you do not wear your courage proudly.

I wonder if there is another lesson to be learned here along the lines of - if you are going to poke the bear, you better not also be unarmed and naked.

All the best,

Joe
